CHIEF AND COUNCIL
Chief Harvey Alphonse
(Swalethul't'hw)
As Chief, Harvey sits on all committees. Chief Harvey's primary focus is economic development which
directly influences housing opportunities and
employment.
Chief Harvey has several interests, examples are opportunities
for youth in education, sports, professional development,
employment opportunities and cultural involvement.
Chief Harvey has been a avid hunter and
fisherman and to find out ways to ensure those rights are
protected. Chief Harvey is an active member of the
Longhouse and slahal.
Arvid Charlie (Luschiim)
Information to follow after Arvid is sworn in as Council in
January 2012.
Albie Joe Charlie (Whulquletse)
Served on Council in 1997. Housing is a main priority to him, then Youth interception follows. Education, Housing and Land Investigation are the committees that Albie is involved in. Outside interests include fishing, attending and cooking for
ceremonies at the Longhouse. He enjoys the
outdoors. He also teaches Hul'q'umi'num' to community
members. Albie was once a Social Worker for Cowichan
Tribes.
Stephanie Charlie
Information and picture to follow after Stephanie is sworn in as Council in January 2012.
Cindy Daniels
(Sulsalxumaat)
Cindy has been on Council since 1991. She
wants to bring the voice of the people to
council. Her main concern is Finance and she sits on a
number of committees including Youth & Recreation,
Tobacco Tax, Health Advisory, the Mini Mall, and
Property Tax.
She is interested in knitting, sewing, weaving, canoe paddling,
attending Longhouse events, travelling and family events with her
children and grandchildren.
Diane
Daniels (Qwustunulwut)
As a Council member Diane would like to create fairness to all
Cowichan Tribes employees - equality. Diane's concerns
are with the water/sewer/housing problems that have been going on
for years, we need a solution. Funds for Education have
been the same for years - we need new changes.
The committee's that Diane sits on are Housing Society, Property
Taxation and Education.
Diane's interests are crocheting, gardening, spending time with
her grandchildren, playing Bingo and walking.
Darin George (Swutumutt - Quamichan or Smutyeen
- Somenos)
Darin sits on the Land Investigation Committee (LIC), Constitution, Fisheries and Justice Committee. As a Council member Darin's outlook is not only change, but
growth in a positive way. To work hard for his
community. To look at long term options that are always
in our communities best interest.
Darin's interests are his family, fisheries, learning about
local government bodies; cultural activities; listening to our
Elder's; Treaty and all its implications.
Lester Joe (Supaheloanox)
Lester sits on the following committees: Membership, Land
Management, Youth Recreation, Justice, Environment Resources and
Own Source Revenue (OSR).
Outlook: Frist I would like to thank the people wo voted for me
and to have confidence in me to be a part of your
government. My goal as a council member is to help with
transparency and accountability for the Cowichan
people. I will hard to help make some good decisions
for the best interests for the communities in all
areas. Overall I hope to make "change" for the better
for our communities.
My interests are to help our youth/elders to help connect with
our culture/traditions as First Nations people (hwulhuwh
people).
Diane Modeste

Charles Seymour (Ts'ules)
Newly elected council member, and is waiting for positions on at least four committee's. Charles would like to move forward on his platform which is
"working with families to put community first". Charles
looks forward to working with the community to build positive
relations and seek community input/feed back in applicable
processes.
Charles is working for and with community at various
functions. He is actively working to protect our
language and culture. His motto is you can't practice
our culture without our language. Charles enjoys
spending time with his family, maintaining family values is
important.
William Seymour
(Squthalenuhw)
Newly elected council member, his main concern is to see Cowichan Tribes through its deficit. Throughout the 28 years he has worked with Cowichan Tribes, he has seen and heard of many issues that need to be addressed, and he is willing to help deal with them. For the time being he sits on two committee's which are,
Housing, and Health.
He has been a coach since 1975. Coaching for three
different age brackets in two sports, lacrosse and
soccer. Now coaching for the Cowichan Eagles Soccer
Team, since 1985. He also participates in our Longhouse
gatherings.
Calvin Swustus
(Swutthtus)
Calvin is a retired member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police of 22 years. He also served 8 years with the Commissionaire Corp of Canada. He has been awarded the RCMP Long Service medal for his accomplishments with the RCMP.
He has been an elected Councilor for 7 terms (14 years), and is
presently serving on the Land Management Committee, Justice
Committee, and Child & Family Service and Fisheries
Committee. His most memorable service was the position
as President of the North American Indigenous Games 2008.
Calvin is presently the Justice Coordinator for Cowichan Tribes,
and delivers Restorative Justice Programs, and works closely with
the Valleys enforcement agencies.
Dora Wilson
(Thulamiye)
Dora has been on Council since 1979 and wants to assure that the interests of the community are addressed. She is particularly concerned about housing and the economy. |
