Adoptions Program

We strive to provide the best Cowichan based adoption services with the interest of children, families and our Cowichan Community in consultation with Chief, Council, Elders and our Cowichan Tribes Adoption Committee.

The Adoption Program is guided under the direction of the Adoption Act of British Columbia and the Cowichan Tribes Adoption Committee it is the intent of this program to assist in permanency planning for children in Lalum’utul’ Smun’eem care.

The Adoption Team Consists of:

  • Team Manager
  • Adoption Social Worker
  • Adoption Assistant

The Adoption program has supported to date the adoption of ten Cowichan children and is currently actively involved in the pre adoption work with eighteen children currently in care of the Director.

The Adoption program provides a range of services including:

  • Pre Adoption and Post adoption planning.
  • Training for Adoptive parents.
  • Support Services for adoptive parents.
  • Ongoing training for Guardianship staff and Support Services staff

The adoption program is supported by a memorandum of understanding with Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD) and joint protocols exist in regards to the provision of post adoption services.

The Adoption Enabling Agreement is currently being revised to become an integral part of the overall Delegation Confirmation Agreement, which is a tripartite agreement supported by Canada and MCFD.
