Child Safety

We are mandated by the Child, Family & Community Services Act and by the Cowichan Nation to provide the following delegated services (C-6) to Cowichan Tribes residing on Cowichan Tribes traditional territory.

The Child Safety Team includes:

  • Manager
  • Designate Manager
  • Four C-6 Delegated Social Workers

Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and response to incoming reports;
  • Investigation of a safety/protection concern for children on Cowichan reserves;
  • Guardianship responsibility;
  • Working in cooperation with our Support Services Team to ensure the placement of children in safe environments if necessary;
  • Working within the Cowichan Tribes network of services and community partners to ensure that ancillary support services are in place for Cowichan children and their families and;
  • Responding to on-reserve calls after hours that are reported to the Children's Helpline (310-1234).

This is responsible for assessing reports, and, where necessary conducting investigations and deciding the actions necessary to keep a child safe.

This team also resources the twenty four seven after hours requirements for child protection. The delegated social workers act as guardians for children currently in care.

The Child Safety Team assumes the authority of the files for the Cowichan children who have been in the continuing custody of Ministry of Children and Family Development. This process is guided by a Protocol between Lalum’utul’ Smun’eem and Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
