HEALTHY FAMILIES

Healthy Families help individuals and the community set healthy goals and provide support to achieve these targets. Work undertaken by the Healthy Families team includes:

Prenatal Program – Work with expectant mothers to deliver healthy babies.
Infant and Preschool Health – Monitor child development and provide assistance to those families and children with development delays or medical concerns.
School age Health – Assess development and dental health of children turning five.
Communicable Disease Control - Administer childhood and influenza immunizations as well as other vaccines to the community.
HIV Support Group – Promote awareness of at-risk behaviour, support prevention, and provide care for HIV-positive community members.
Women’s Health – Provide clinical services and counselling support for the reproductive health needs of women.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Support Group – Provide access to information and support for families and caregivers affected by fetal alcohol syndrome.
Tobacco Strategy – Integrating tobacco use reduction strategies with other health programs.

Professionals employed by Healthy Families include registered nurses and community health representatives.

Challenge
One third of children turning five in 2002 had developmental delays. This is being addressed early to reduce high-school dropout and unemployment rates in the future.
