Status Card
For registered Cowichan members, the department will provide a Certificate of Indian Status ('Status Card'), a wallet-sized card verifying the holder is a registered Indian with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.  Cards are issued on Monday's from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Cowichan Tribes Administration Office.  A recent passport photo (without hats/headgear, sunglasses, dark-tinted glasses, or bandanas) is required.

Adult status cards are valid for five years from the date of issue; for minors under 18, cards are valid for three years.

Membership with Cowichan Tribes
Membership with Cowichan Tribes is guided by the Membership Code, and applications are reviewed and recommended by the Membership Committee, and approved by Chief and Council.  Individuals who wish to apply for membership should mail or deliver the following to the Band Office:

  • The appropriate Membership Application Form; and
  • Proof of registration with INAC; and
  • Any other necessary documents (for example, custody orders, adoption papers, etc.).
