CHILD SAFETY

The Child Safety team is responsible for the protection of Cowichan Tribes’ children.

Social workers ensure children at risk are safe, at times needing to remove children until the parent(s) can resolve their problems.  Every effort is made to develop plans with parents so the child(ren) can stay in their home or with extended family.  The support provided by this group goes well beyond  the comparable service currently provided by the Ministry of Child and Family Development.

Case File Management (removal of children from at-risk situations) involves a court process that includes:

  • Intake
  • Investigation
  • Assessment
  • Developing a service plan/guardianship
  • Intervention/removal
  • Monitoring
  • Return
Other work undertaken by the Child Safety team includes:

  • Respite
  • Counselling
  • Financial support to attend residential treatment centres
  • Referrals to programs
  • Voluntary Care Agreements
  • After hours coverage
Child Safety staff are professional social workers, with Level 15 qualifications, meeting all Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI) as set out by the Ministry of Child and Family Development.
