SUPPORT SERVICES

This is the foster home program.  Support Services is guided by the Cowichan principle of skami’lum’ (caring for another person’s child) within the standards and procedures set out in the Child, Family and Community Services Act.

Support Services endeavours to provide the best possible foster care.  Lalum’utul' Smun’eem strongly believes that remaining connected to the family and community is fundamental to the child’s well being, to strongly reinforce the child(ren)’s sense of belonging.  If a child(ren) cannot stay with their parent(s), then every effort is made to first place the child(ren) with someone in their extended family, and failing that, with a Cowichan Tribes member.

Lalum'utul' Smun'eem foster homes provide varied support, ranging from emergency to short- and long-term placements.  Others provide respite and relief services.

Work undertaken by the Support Services team includes:

  • Recruiting foster parents
  • Foster home assessments
  • Supporting foster homes
  • Foster parent training
  • Overseeing Hulithut Group Home
  • Development of a Practice Audit Tool
All Support Staff are professional social workers, accredited between Level 13 and 15.
